Look at the outdoor unit. Leaves, grass clippings or a fallen shade cloth over the coil will choke it.

Feel the airflow at the vents. Weak air points to a filter or duct problem rather than a gas fault.
If the unit is icing up, switch it off and let it thaw. Running a frozen system flat out can kill the compressor, and that turns a small repair into a big one.
